Volunteer Opportunities

“Volunteering at RISE was one of my best experiences at Syracuse University. I leave with such gratitude for the opportunity to connect on so many levels with the staff, the other volunteers, and all of our students in such a short period of time. Working with this program has shown me that I can be a confident educator, who is capable of getting comfortable in challenging situations and can communicate effectively (even when there are language barriers). It is incredible what can be accomplished when everyone has the same drive in our hearts!”

Refugee & Immigrant Self-Empowerment (RISE) relies upon the support of volunteers to assist in carrying out the day-to-day activities of the RISE Center and the varied programs we offer to our refugee and immigrant clientele. Year round, we are always looking for volunteers to serve in a variety of capacities, including:

  • Providing Academic Support to Youth Ages 6-25
  • Fundraising + Special Events Assistance
  • Case Management + Employment Assistance
  • ENL (English as a New Language) + Citizenship Test Volunteer Teacher
  • Administrative Assistance

“I have always loved working with youth, but having the opportunity to work with refugee youth was a very new experience for me. I have learned to stay humble in situations and come from a place of understanding and patience when talking to these children. Many of these kids just need a friend and a mentor growing up and I feel like I could really be that source for many of these students this past semester. I never saw these students as refugee students who had less than me, I always spoke to them on a personal level and never tried to paint myself as an authority figure that told them what to do. Of course, I demanded respect, but it was mutual, I always showed them respect first.”
