Job Title: Academic Instructor – Youth Career Exploration and Access Program

Status: Full-time

Reports To: Program Manager


The Instructor will develop and deliver workforce oriented curriculum for youth ages 14-21 years which will include active listening and situational judgement, math, and reading, and English language development for youth whose first language is not English.

Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Develop and deliver program curriculum and detailed lesson plans.
    • Develop a 12-month schedule of weekly workshops, monthly field trips, monthly workshops, training and job fair.
    • Execute career exploration workshops, training, field trips and events.
    • Support high school diploma attainment, through direct support, and coordination of trained volunteers.
    • Develop academic lessons, and coordinate tutoring services which will support high school diploma attainment.
    • Establish and maintain a positive, trusting, and ongoing relationship with clients.
    • Work collaboratively with a team that includes program manager, instructors, counsellors, and case managers to execute program activities.
    • Orient the participants to various educational, training, and occupational paths through an integrated collection of workshops and activities focused on high-demand, high-opportunity jobs.
    • Coordinate with RISE’s partner organization to plan and execute program activities.

Qualifications: Applicants should have the following qualifications or experiential equivalent:

    • Associate degree required, Bachelor’s degree preferred.
    • Experience working with English as a new language populations.
    • Teaching experience at the middle or high school level.
    • Working background in youth education.
    • Experience working with diverse staff and clientele.
    • Demonstrated cultural competency skills and experience.
    • Computer literacy including Microsoft Office required.

Organization Description:  

Refugee & Immigrant Self-Empowerment, Inc. (RISE) is a human service nonprofit founded by Somali Bantu refugees in 2004 to ease the transition into post-resettlement (90 days in-country) for members of the Somali Bantu Community throughout Syracuse. As its clientele grew increasingly diverse, RISE extended its post-resettlement services to all refugees and immigrants throughout Onondaga County. The majority of RISE is operated and governed by former refugees, delivered a variety of services which endeavor to promote self-sufficiency and autonomy through employment, education, and economic empowerment.
